The First Time

In remembering our loved ones or any other loss, there are several “firsts” we experience:

  • This is my first day living without…

  • This is my first day back to work since…

  • This is my first (specific holiday) without…

  • This is my loved one’s first birthday since they left us…

  • This is my first birthday without…

  • This is the first year that you have been gone…

  • I wish they were here to see…

Those are just some of many “firsts” that we experience after a loss. I believe it’s safe to say that sometimes those “firsts” can make us feel like our grief has started from the beginning. Some may consider it a set-back and feel they aren’t moving forward with their healing process. It is okay. This is normal.

Allow yourself to grieve. My suggestion is to dwell on the wonderful memories that you had during all of those moments. Write them in a journal if you choose to. Look at some photos, especially if you have some capturing those special moments. It may bring some tears but then you will experience a smile or laughter that will brighten your day.
